What and where

South Oxford Park is a small neighborhood park on Cumberland Street between Atlantic Commons and Atlantic Avenue, on the southern edge of Fort Greene. It has two outdoor hard courts. Atlantic Terminal and Barclays Center are a few blocks west, which puts the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q and R trains and the LIRR within a ten-minute walk, and the C at Lafayette Avenue is closer still.

The park sits on the former grounds of the South Oxford Tennis Club, for decades the only Black-owned tennis club in New York City. The city bought the land in 1998 and kept the courts when it turned the site into a public park.

How to get on court

South Oxford runs on the standard NYC Parks system: a $100 adult season permit or a $15 single-play pass, one per player, from April 1 through the Sunday before Thanksgiving. There is no online booking. A sign-up sheet manages the courts in season, and outside staffed hours it is first come, first served. Courts are open from 8am to dusk with no lights.

The reason to know South Oxford is the queue, or the lack of one. With only two courts it fills up, but you can usually walk on without a wait, and it is the standard fallback for anyone who did not get up early enough for Fort Greene's sign-up sheet a few blocks north.
